Réplica

Birgit Ulher – trumpet, radio, speaker, objects
Felipe Araya – peruvian cajón, extended acoustic percussion and objects

The duo Réplica came into being in Chile in 2012, where they played concerts in Santiago de Chile and Valparaiso.

In their performances, both work with free improvisation in combination with an approach focused on objects and material as the basis of their improvisational conversation. Réplica has an audiovisual approach and works with focus on spatial geometry of the objects they use as instruments. They consider the space as part of their performance.

Birgit Ulher plays trumpet, various materials and objects. Felipe Araya plays Peruvian cajon, other boxes and geometric objects such as wooden sticks and steel bars.

With these materials arranged in the space, both activate a sonorous, visual and textural performance as an extended exhibition, especially focused on a simultaneous musical and geometric articulation.

Réplica has presented its work in Latin America and Europe, for example at Umbral festival in Oaxaca in Mexico, Universidad de las Americas in Santiago de Chile and katarakt festival in Hamburg. They released their first CD Scoriacon in 2016 on the Ljubljana-based label Inexhaustible Edition.

Currently, Ulher lives in Hamburg and Araya in Berlin, Germany, which allows a closer and more updated interaction than the ten years of work across continents.
